Welcome to Year 5
Hello, welcome to Year 5. Our cass teacher is Mrs Darwin. We also have Mrs Burns and Miss Smith who help and support our class.
In English, we are reading Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse by Chris Riddell. In maths we are learning about place value and we can’t wait to learn about Earth and Space in Science.
On a Monday, we have P.E and can come into school in our P.E. kits. This half term our P.E. unit is Athletics.
Homework is handed out on a Friday and is to be returned the following Friday. Everyone has their homework stuck into their homework books. Each week, there will are 5 spellings to learn, reading 3 times per week and some maths fluency questions. There is a Homework Club on a Friday after school for children to complete their homework with some support from teachers.
How can I support my child’s learning?
Reading: Your child should aim to read every day and with an adult 3x per week. Please sign the homework diary on these occasions.
How to best support your child with their reading:
- discuss meaning of challenging vocabulary
- ask your child questions about what they’ve read
- make predictions
Spelling: The children will have a list of words to learn each week, through a variety of strategies. Their spellings will be given on Google Classroom as part of their homework. They should practice these and will be tested on the words regularly during the following week.
Maths: One piece per week, relating to key expectations. Encourage your child to use maths apps such as; Times Table Rock Stars, Hit the Button and Sumdog.
How to best support your child in maths:
- use the method shown on the home learning sheet
- regularly practice times tables (up to 12x), number bonds and telling the time
Occasional home learning:
- topic – geography, history or D&T
Knowledge Organisers are a handy document that children use in school. These show the key information and vocabulary that children will be learning and using in the different subject areas.
